The Micalvi Ship

Most yachts choose to moor alongside Micalvi or tie to one of the nearby Armada mooring buoys. Together they offer the most sheltered port in the region. It is also possible to safely anchor nearby. Micalvi is the home to the Club de Yates Micalvi, a well known refuge for sailors.

Today, a grounded ship surrounded by yachts, Micalvi was a transport ship with a rich history. The 80-meter ship displaced 850 tons and could make 9.5 knots with its 380hp coal-fired steam engine. First commissioned as the Bragi, then later named the Bostonlines, she was built at the Osterseewerft Shipyard in Germany in 1925 and used as a merchant vessel on the Baltic Sea. It was acquired by the Chilean Navy in 1928 with the sole purpose of transporting the new ammunition for the Battleship Almirante Latorre from Europe to Chile.

The original idea was to scrap or sell the ship after it arrived with its cargo in Tierra del Fuego; nevertheless, it was decided to renovate it and put it to work in the Magallanes area to provide lines of communication throughout the isolated areas. The Contramaestre Micalvi sailed for 35 years through the intricate southern channels, becoming one of the symbols of Chilean sovereignty in the 1950s.

The Micalvi was decommissioned, converted into a pontoon and stationed in Puerto Williams, in 1961. That same year it was declared a historic ship by the International Commission of Historical Vessels, and currently serves as the headquarters of the local Yacht Club, constituting one of the attractions of said port.

Today, the Micalvi is the main meeting place for yachtsmen from all over the world who challenge the southern seas. It is the southernmost yacht base on the planet. A place to refresh before making the leap to circumnavigate the legendary Cape Horn or the more adventurous sail 580 miles from the Cape defying the stormy waters of the Drake Sea towards the Antarctica Peninsula, and the place to recover thereafter. It is a place to find peace after a storm. The space to recharge your energy and meet people who transmit the same frequency, a place where the brotherhood of the southern seas is formed.
